Bandcamp, one of the most important platforms for independent artists and record labels, announced that it will not allow the distribution of music created wholly or partially through artificial intelligence (AI). The move reinforces its long-standing commitment to valuing human labor, artistic authorship, and the direct relationship between musicians and listeners.

According to the platform, the decision aims to protect genuine creativity and prevent catalogs from being saturated with automatically generated content, which could harm the visibility and economic sustainability of real artists. Bandcamp maintains that music is a deeply human form of cultural expression and that its ecosystem is designed to support those who consciously and authorially compose, perform, and produce works.

The company also pointed to concerns related to copyright and ethics. Many AI tools are trained on existing recordings without the explicit consent of creators, which raises legal and moral conflicts. By banning AI-made music, Bandcamp seeks to avoid legal disputes and maintain a fair environment for artists and labels.

The decision aligns with Bandcamp’s positioning as an “artist-first” platform, known for offering better payment conditions and greater control for musicians over their work. At a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing in the music industry, Bandcamp’s stance marks a clear contrast with other services that are actively exploring the use of AI for content creation and distribution.

For independent artists and labels, the measure is seen as an important show of support, ensuring that the platform remains a space where originality, artistic identity, and human work stay at the center of the musical experience.
